Will you live in a tight place packed with the nicest and most beautiful individuals, along with the vilest criminals and thieves,  terrorists and all sorts of “crowd” whose main intention is to rob everybody blind?

That is a weird question, I know, but I woke up at 2:00 a.m. today with a title in mind. “Fitting the world into a box.”
It must be a result of my subconscious, working overtime, as always.
That’s what the experts say, right?
Our subconscious never stops working…
So, what triggered the thought from lodging at the back of my mind to be processed in overdrive when my conscious mind was supposed to be resting?
The answer is something that I saw in one of those “boxes” – maybe like where you are reading this post from.
It could be a smaller “box” that fits into either of your hands, it could be something a bit bigger which you hold with both hands, or something a bit bigger still that sits either on your lap or on a table.
Ah, you know what I am talking about! A smartphone, a tablet, then either a laptop or a desktop.
The thought of putting our individual worlds into such tiny devices sounds silly, really…
But isn’t that what we are all, sort of doing?
Anything and everything that has to do with our lives individually, and collectively, can all be found in that small box – whichever of those we are using at any given moment. Okay, maybe not absolutely everything, yet. But we are getting there.
As things sit now, it has reference to our location, our house, our habits, our friends, the food we eat, the things we do, the transportation we take, places we frequent, and sometimes, even the thoughts that are just forming in our minds – even before we can fully grasp or comprehend what they are – like what I am writing now, and you would hopefully read later, is already in that box!
I have nothing against that box – per se.
I use it all the time myself.
In fact, it is nothing short of magical. Practically everything that you want to look for is in it!
Every single one of the items I enumerated a few spaces above are there, and more! It even contains our wishes, our dreams, and goals in life.

You probably already noticed, you search for something, and even when you are already done looking for whatever it was, you are still presented with items that are similar to it -days after.
People engaged in Big Data sees to that.
All that they need is a hint of what you are, what you want, etc. and they can, and will, give you all the possible choices there are – including the wrong ones.
And that is what concerns me, actually.
Of course, the choices are still ours… But sometimes, all the choices they present are crafted by them. Giving the effect that whatever we choose is actually not our choice but theirs.

Like, you know, that game kids play: “okay, you can CHOOSE between the TWO, except for this one!” and there were one two choices presented.

If you are just a little bit observant, you will probably remember an instance when you click on something that you are really interested in but that click brought you to an entirely different thing!

Had that kind of experience?

That simple, innocent click, if you are not lucky, can make all your money in a bank disappear!

SEO people would tell you  never to trick anyone if you are trying to optimize a post, but did you notice how many of them are actually doing that?

And what about those who are not there to optimize a post. Those whose only intention is to surreptitiously separate everyone from their fortunes?

And, again,  did you notice which of the posts are having the most views?
As I was saying… Everything is in there!
All the good things and all the bad things are all in there – including good and bad people.
The thieves, the scammers, the police, the criminals, the intelligence agencies, the terrorists, the good hearts, the bad hearts, the governments (that could be either bad or good), the bilkers, crooks, charlatans, the opportunists, rapists, heroes and villains and black hats!
They say the black hats could be the worst lot in that box because they can be on either side of the fence of evil and good and they are the ones who are, like, the masters of that box.

And that means, any of those boxes I mentioned.
I do not know much about the black hats, and if a book I read would be the basis, those guys, as a group or community, can be truly formidable. Though, some of them have individually gone to prison (real prisons} as well.

The book gave me the impression that all the firewalls, anti-viruses, and whatever internet security apps and hardwares there may be, the protection they can give us would be nothing more than what a thin Japanese paper can do to protect us against a Category 5 Super Typhoon like Haiyan.
As communities, they could be fighting each other as well. Like I said, I don’t know much about them.
What I know is this, the box can be your friend or your foe at the same time.
We, as a whole, and you, as an individual, have to be careful in dealing with it.
Sure, the whole world is in it…
Heroes and villains included.
But the most active of all are the tricksters who have unquenchable thirst for money!

It is not a very friendly place, that box.

It is like a wormhole into our private lives – and everybody is welcome!

It is probably inevitable.

The Internet of Things is going to be pervasive.

The amount of money that will be up for grabs with IoT is just too big to be ignored by all sorts of businesses who can think up of ways to get connected to it.

The IoT will have its own benefits for the end users, the consumers, but all of the IoT fuss is about money. Big business.

Especially for the guys with bad intents.

Imagine treasure troves that are lying around everywhere – and you have the wherewithal to pry them open!

The clueless connected “things” (which include humans) will be sitting ducks to them.

Well, unless someone can really come up with something that can thwart their wicked objectives.

Chilling thoughts.

You’d hope the “Defenders” are not just in the movies to save our day.

Faster access to NAIA Terminals and MOA from SLEX or South Expressway

A faster way to NAIA Terminals 1, 2, 3, MOA and the business establishments along Macapagal Avenue has opened recently giving a little respite in the perennially congested streets of Metro Manila.

Reports said the elevated road connecting the SLEX access road to NAIA Terminals were opened a few days before Christmas of 2016. I tried the portion coming from Macapagal Avenue a few weeks earlier than that but that brought me only up to Imelda Avenue.

I hesitated to do it again soon after, afraid that I might just end up in the middle of a traffic jam, which was practically the whole place most of the time.

I finally had the courage to try again yesterday and what you will see in the video below was the result.

The toll fee costs P45.00 but the traffic was still relatively light.

Timely information can save lives. PAGASA, Philippines Weather Bureau has to step up its services to be able to serve the country better.

Forget the debate on what is causing climate change. Let’s concentrate on the fact that we now have super typhoons that are exceedingly agile, awfully erratic, and they are very destructive.

Think Ondoy, Yolanda, Glenda and now Nina…

I traveled some portions of the path taken by Yolanda four (4) months after the devastation. I’ve driven from Manila to Matnog, boarded the Roro to Allen, Northern Samar and took the wheels again from there to Calbayog City then Catbalogan City and turned East in Paranas to Taft, Eastern Samar and on to Borongan City, Guiuan, then traced the way from there to Tacloban and Biliran Island.

I have seen the destructions, minus the angst, and if I noticed something it is the seeming concentration of Yolanda’s power to a smaller band, probably closer to the eye.

That gave me a more concrete idea on what “Near the Center” means whenever they say “with the strength of 250kph NEAR THE CENTER and gustiness of…”

Nina,  raging in the Marinduque area as I began writing this, has downed the tower of a radio station of MBC in Catanauan, Quezon which was about 10 kilometers away from the path taken by Typhoon Nina from Buhi, Camarines Sur, but the tower of a similar MBC station in Calauag, Quezon – some 30 kilometers away (air distance) from the path remains standing.

This kind of information is critical in saving lives and properties, thus Pagasa’s decision to come up with hourly updates whenever there are storms is laudable.

I’d like to point out, as well, that PAGASA’s website is now more accessible than it was before (unless it was due to the Christmas Season when people are more concerned about celebrations than checking the weather portal).

Unfortunately, the pictures below will show that the “hourly update” is not hourly.

Screenshot of the Pagasa webpage showing the “Hourly Update.” The latest update shown was at 2:00 am December 26, 2016 the time stamp on the upper right corner of the screen was 3:51 a.m.

The Best Christmas Gift From A Grinch…

Thomas S Monson’s idea that “Christmas is the spirit of giving,” has five (5) more words after that phrase which says: “without a thought of getting.”

Giving, because you know it will come back to you a thousand-fold is not giving. It is greed in sheep’s skin!

What gifts? Why should I give material gifts?

Best Christmas Gift

And who’s a Grinch?!

No!!! I am not a Grinch!  How dare you think…!

Well, maybe I am.

If your idea of Christmas is tied up with fun, glitters and material things that speak of money, yeah, to you I am a Grinch, because I think that idea of giving has become an instrument for greed!

Christmas giving can be seen thru another lens.

Those who cannot find happiness and contentment in mere accumulation of expensive stones, like diamonds, and trappings of gold, the outnumbered multitude who realizes that doing a good turn to others, though the acts are often ignored and belittled, know that these are the better gifts to give. Far worthier than anything branded that can be tied with a ribbon or wrapped with a glossy piece of paper…

To them, I believe I am not a Grinch.

Thomas S. Monson’s idea that “Christmas is the spirit of giving,” has five (5) more words after that phrase which says: “without a thought of getting.”

The people who know this give almost on a daily basis, when needed, when they are least expected, almost always when nobody cares to give, almost always even when it is not the season for it. It was not forced by tradition nor by any peer pressure.

Those people, sometimes, give mindless material gifts that briefly excites the receiver as well, but they give not because they have so much in excess, they give not because they believe that by giving they will receive a thousand folds in return (That sounds like a business strategy), they give because it is in their hearts to give.

They instinctively know the other half of Thomas S. Monson’s quote: “without a thought of getting.”

Giving, because you know it will come back to you a thousand-fold is not giving.  It is greed in sheep’s skin!

Maybe I am a Grinch because I am not quick enough to pluck an idea out of the blue for the best gifts on an occasion when everybody is expected to give something and everyone is expecting to receive something in return.

Yeah, well, maybe I am really a Grinch. Because I think that a gift that is expected is not a gift. It is entitlement! Now, admit it or not, gifts are expected on Christmases.

Okay, so I am a Grinch. But I know I will have no problem on knowing and deciding what to do if you happen to be on a beach and a strong current threatens to take you to the depths, I know that I will jump into that very same water without a thought to try and save you or suffer the same faith as yours, if I fail.

As a Grinch, I want to keep things to myself.

  • If you were the one who worried about your future finances because your father was retiring and your family is about to lose a steady stream of income, I will not tell you how you suddenly find it very easy to establish the business that you always wanted to have.
  • If you have suddenly amassed a small (or big) fortune because of a “little” advice you received from somewhere or someone about investing, you can keep on believing that it was either because of pure luck or your own smarts that you got them.
  • If you were the hapless husband who was about to lose his wife because of your irresponsibility, you will never know how you suddenly have a very understanding and loving wife who just recently acquired a broad outlook in married life.
  • If you were that very insecure worker who was on the verge of resigning from an important job because nobody seems to see your real worth (which include you and your superiors) you will keep on wondering how you ended up becoming the head of your department.
  • If you were that girl or that boy who was about to lose your most prized catch for one reason or another who suddenly found them more caring and responsive to your needs, you can keep on believing what you wish to believe that made them change their ways towards you and your relationship.
  • If you’ve been around me, one way or another, and if you have somehow told me a thing or two that bothers you and whatever it was that you told me somehow changed for the better – whether you noticed it or not – then, just be glad that they did.

I am a Grinch. I do things my way. I don’t have to tell anyone about them. And I don’t give material gifts.

As a Grinch, you can ask me what I want as a gift, but I will not be able to tell you what it is. I am Grinch! But whether you’d been bad or good to me, I already had the best gift from you – (which was your company) no matter how momentary it had been.

Merry Christmas to all… you Dummies!

The best Christmas gift does not come from the pocket, or paid for electronically, but from a symbolic anatomical part of the physical human body – that gift does not have to be physical – though it can take that form once in a while.

Duterte continues Bicol International Airport project at Barangay Alobo, Daraga, Albay
The long-delayed P4.7-B Bicol International Airport being constructed at Barangay Alobo, Daraga, Albay which President Duterte said will be completed in 2 to 3 years if there will be no corruption involved. RD

President Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte, the Philippines popularly elected leader who many local and foreign press organizations prefer to see thru a sensational albeit myopic lens focused on alleged extra-judicial killings, has given a breath of life to the long-delayed Bicol International Airport project.

The access road leading to the new airport is at the right side of Asian Highway 26 (AH26) formerly known as the Philippine-Japan Friendship Highway or Maharlika Highway at Barangay Alobo, Daraga, Albay going to Sorsogon.

Former Albay Governor Joey Salceda, who envisioned and proposed the project more than a decade ago, said the decisive action taken by President Duterte on the plan “has infused new life into the project never felt since its inception.”

At the groundbreaking ceremony held at Barangay Alobo in Daraga, Albay where the airport under construction is located on December 9, Salceda extolled President Duterte as a “good man who genuinely cares for his people.” He said Duterte’s heart is in the right place and his “guts” are honed by years of service as local chief executive.

Salceda supported one of Duterte’s opponents in the 2015 Presidential elections.

Despite party affiliations, which was a big hindrance in the completion of major projects in the past, however, Duterte said the P4.7 Bicol International Airport will be completed in three years if there will be no corruption.

Salceda said Duterte did in four months what the previous administration failed to do in three years. These include the awarding of the land-side component of the project which costs P780 million and the bidding of the passenger terminal worth P1.8-B.

The airport, which conforms to international standards, will have a 2.30 kilometers runway that will enable it to accommodate bigger aircraft that the existing Legaspi City airport cannot at the moment.

The completion of the airport is expected to spur further economic developments in the province, if not the whole region.

Salceda who is now a house representative for the 2nd district of Albay is considered to possess one of the best economic minds in the country. A former stock market analyst, he served as the national economic adviser in the Arroyo Administration.

Truth is… Well, that is the problem!

I do not know how many of you guys are like me, but I seem to have a problem with the “truth.”

No, it is not because I am always guilty of something that I cannot tell the truth. It is actually because many of the things that I was made to believe were the truth,  turned out to be… not the exact absolute truth!

Let’s try that high school subject History. While you were still a student, when you were made to read the history of… whatever, were you not led to believe that what you read was the truth? If so, what will you think when you eventually find out that history can be influenced by the victors?

How about Astronomy? Were you among those who were initially made to believe that there were 9 planets in our solar system? So, what happened when they decided that Pluto was not a planet? And then, again, when they reconsidered and declared that Pluto is actually a planet?

Shall we go to Medical Science? How long have the authorities in this field held that the brain reaches maturity at a certain age and that it’s all downhill from there? It is actually unfair to those who believed that claim because according to current studies, those who believed that “truth” were denied the chance to maximize their potential that can be achieved thru Neuroplasticity.

But then, of course, there are more ways on how the “Truth” can be abused and that is why I said the “truth” is the problem.

That is also the reason why I thought of coming up with this project…

Maybe to point out a few things that aren’t so true, after all.

Well, at least, I plan to give it a try.
